School Board Responds with Technology

In December 2008 we posted the article “Turf but no Technology” on this website. We wrote this article to point out that the School District was asking parents to fund computer technology for the classrooms through fund raising by the Parent Teacher Organizations while the District had just spent over $2,000,000 of our tax dollars for new Turf Fields. The Superintendent stated that using this plan, it would take 3 years to complete the technology roll-out. We felt it was illogical and inappropriate to ask for additional funding from parents for something that should take precedence in the classrooms and we felt that 3 years was too long to wait for technology to assist in the classrooms.

School Board and Asst. Superintendent Wilt Responds

In response to our concerns and those of other parents, the School Board stated they would review the technology plan. As a result of that review, the School District has reduced the implementation plan to 2 years. Additionally, the School Board and District made presentations to the public describing their plans, which include the purchase of new computer equipment and training for teachers.

This reaction by the School Board and School District is appreciated. It is also apparent that Assistant Superintendent Melody Wilt has reacted very well to parents’ concerns and has implemented a plan which will provide the computer equipment and training that our District needs.  We appreciate her willingness to listen to the parents and to react in a positive manner.  We look forward to the results of her program.

We believe the School Board must continue to examine this issue and dedicate money and resources to this plan to ensure our children are introduced to the latest technology and to ensure technology is used effectively in our classrooms.

We appreciate the good response from the Board and the District to address this issue and we look forward to the results.
